The unprecedented shutdown of the United States economy is beginning to take its toll.
American citizens are anxious to regain their livelihoods.
And Attorney General William Barr says he will put his foot down to stop one growing problem.
The United States has been in lockdown for over a month due to the Wuhan coronavirus.
There have been over 850,000 confirmed cases and nearly 48,000 deaths so far.
However, the country has done a good job of flattening the curve and ensuring the healthcare system doesn’t get overwhelmed.
And now that the country has passed its peak, Americans are itching to restart their lives.
But a number of petty tyrants around the country are standing in the way.
Democrat politicians are getting too comfortable with their emergency powers and taking inane measures to stop harmless activity.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer has been particularly meddlesome. She’s banned citizens from traveling from one of their own properties to another and has banned certain sections of super-stores, including home improvement and gardening.
Attorney General William Barr sees these actions of Whitmer and other overzealous politicians and signaled that he will intervene if need be.
While speaking with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Barr said, “We’re looking carefully at a number of these rules that are being put into place, and if we think one goes too far, we initially try to jawbone the governors into rolling them back or adjusting them. And if they’re not and people bring lawsuits, we file statements of interest and side with the plaintiffs.”
Barr continued, “These are unprecedented burdens on civil liberties right now. You know, the idea that you have to stay in your house is disturbingly close to house arrest…I’m not saying it wasn’t justified. I’m not saying in some places it might still be justified. But it’s very onerous, as is shutting down your livelihood.”
Hopefully, the fact that Barr is keeping tabs on some of these outlaw policies will keep local politicians in check.
Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti shut down skate parks and beach walkways by filling them with sand.
In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has encouraged Soviet-style reporting on fellow citizens who aren’t socially distancing themselves accordingly.
Politicians like Whitmer, Garcetti, and de Blasio believe they know what’s best for their citizens.
But people should have the freedom to make their own decisions. If people want to go back to work or take a walk in the park, they should be able to do so.
Meanwhile, Garcetti let the L.A. Marathon proceed despite the threat of the coronavirus, and de Blasio encouraged New Yorkers to go attend a film festival around the same time.
There’s only so much the American people will endure.
If these petty tyrants don’t loosen their control, they could find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit.
