What To Do If You’re Stranded In One Life-Threatening Scenario

Freezing

Part of preparation is being ready for different situations.

There’s no “one size fits all” approach to survival.

Here’s what to do if you’re stranded in one particular life-threatening scenario.

As winter approaches, the threat of freezing temperatures is becoming a reality.

Pipes freeze, roads ice over, and people tragically die of exposure.

Getting caught in the dangerous elements can put your life in serious jeopardy if you’re not prepared.

And getting stranded in your car in frigid weather conditions is something that must be taken seriously.

Icy roads could be undrivable, visibility could be too low, snow could be blocking a passageway, or your car simply might not start.

Here are some supplies you should have in your car emergency kit to help you survive the winter.

Water

As you can only survive three days without water, it is one of the most important items to have. Store bottles in your trunk, and opt for smaller ones instead of gallon jugs because they defrost fast.

Food

This goes hand in hand with water. Make sure you have a supply of non-perishable food in your kit such as nuts, canned fruit, and granola bars.

Mylar Blankets

Thick Mylar thermal blankets will come in handy if you’re stranded in your vehicle.

They will help prevent hypothermia and shock by conserving body heat, which is essential as the temperature begins to drop.

Hand Warmers

Hand warmers are necessary to keep your hands warm. The extremities farthest from your heart get cold the easiest.

It’s important to keep your hands and feet warm because it’s incredibly difficult to function when they get too cold.

Gloves

Gloves are important for the same reason as hand warmers.

If your hands are too cold for too long, you will start to experience circulation problems that could put your hands at risk.

If you’re going to be maneuvering outside, have a good pair of insulated gloves to keep your hands warm.

Waterproof Matches

Waterproof/windproof matches could be lifesavers in frigid conditions.

They can even work after being submerged in water.

Starting a fire can be very difficult in ideal conditions, let alone in life-threatening cold weather.

These will come in handy in a pinch.

Lighter

On a similar note, a lighter will be of great use.

Having a flame you can control is critical in these situations, plus lights and fluid won’t take up a lot of space in an emergency survival kit.

Flashlight

A flashlight with extra batteries is another essential item.

Overcast days, long nights, and snowfall can make visibility a serious issue in the winter.

Make sure you have a flashlight handy so you can move around and accomplish simple tasks.

Cell Phone Charger

When you’re stranded, there may not be a more useful tool than a cell phone.

Make sure you have the capability to charge your phone in your car, or even better, have an alternative power source like a solar charger.

This will increase your chances of getting rescued or navigating unfamiliar terrain.
