People go off grid for many reasons. Some people go off grid because they don’t trust that the current infrastructure (power companies, municipal water, etc.) will continue to work well, and they want to ensure that they are able to maintain their living standards no matter what happens. Other people enjoy the idea of being self-sufficient. Still others don’t trust the government and want to disappear because they don’t like the idea of being tracked or spied on.
The people in the last group are really going to hate a proposed bill in the Senate.
Senate Bill 1241 has the (maybe) unintended side effect of seeking to track all of your off-line and off grid assets. Essentially, this means, while you currently have very little financial privacy, if this bill passes, you’ll have even less. Claire Bernish writes,
A new bill seeks to track your money and assets incessantly, will enjoin any business with government ties to act as a de facto arm of DHS, and would steal all of your assets — including Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies — should you fail to report funds when traveling with over $10,000.
Under the guise of combating money laundering, Senate Bill 1241, “Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017,” ramps up regulation of digital currency and other autocratic financial controls in an attempt to ensure none of your assets can escape one of the State’s most nefarious, despised powers: civil asset forfeiture.
All of this under the farcically broad umbrella of fighting terrorism.
The penalty for not reporting these assets while traveling is, potentially, seizure of all of your assets (not just the ones that you were supposed to report) and up to ten years in prison. Simply for not reporting that you are carrying what is yours with you.
Of course, there are all kinds of Constitutional issues with this bill. If you’re not doing anything illegal, why should they be able to force you to report assets that you have with you? Why should they even care?
But, this seems like a question which would fall on deaf ears. Just look at the already widespread use of civil forfeiture for evidence that it’s not about your rights but about their control over you and their personal profit.
Big Brother wants even more power over you, and this bill needs to be killed before it even comes up for a vote.
