The coronavirus is bringing out the worst in politicians.
A relief bill was held up in Congress because Democrats wanted to add measures completely irrelevant to fighting the pandemic.
And one mayor wants to use the coronavirus to do something terrifying.
Before a single case of the Wuhan coronavirus was detected in Champaign, Illinois, Mayor Deborah Feinen granted herself emergency powers to seize firearms.
Times of crises are precisely when the government looks to expand its powers and this is one of those moments.
Here are just some of the emergency powers the City of Champaign granted itself:
“Order the discontinuance of selling, distributing, dispensing or giving away of explosives or explosive agents, firearms or ammunition of any character whatsoever.”
That explicitly says the city can ban the sale of firearms.
“Order City employees or agents, on behalf of the City, to take possession of any real or personal property of any person…and to take possession of and for a limited time, occupy and use any real estate to accomplish alleviation of the disaster, or the effects thereof.”
And that’s the city giving itself the right to seize property.
The emergency powers declaration also permits the city to ration private property as they see fit.
As former mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”
These “wartime” declarations are the conditions under which leftists always want to live.
They rhapsodize over World War II when factories were nationalized for the war effort and professional sports were disrupted because the men were drafted.
For leftists, there’s always a “World War II” crisis that requires major sectors of the economy either to be shut down or put under the control of government.
Climate change has commonly been called “our World War II” by oblivious millennials like freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Seizing guns in the face of a crisis certainly isn’t new.
During Hurricane Katrina, local governments did exactly that.
From a 2005 New York Times report, “Local police officers began confiscating weapons from civilians in preparation for a forced evacuation of the last holdouts still living here…”
Times of emergency are exactly when rights are the most fragile.
Champaign quickly had to clarify that they didn’t intend to seize guns:

However, it’s easy to see why locals don’t trust the mayor and the city council after a spokesman says,
“None of the options will necessarily will be implemented but are available in order to protect the welfare and safety of our community if needed.”
Freedom requires vigilance, or else it will slip away.
