Well, here is something that you don’t see every day: how to start a fire with steel wool and a 9 volt battery. No kidding. (Hat tip to here for the video link.)
As mentioned in the video below, take care to keep these items away from your face as you work through this process to start a fire. You’ll never regret being safe when building a fire. Trust me on that.
Now, this could probably be done using any way to arc the circuit between the positive and negative poles from the 9 volt battery, and, in that light, you may possibly be able to do this with other batteries or combinations of batteries if you can complete the circuit to create sparks. However, we know 9 volts work, and you probably have that and steel wool around the house, so work with what is easy to access.
The key is to link the poles using the steel wool as a conductor, effectively arcing the current and causing some sparks to jump off of the steel wool to light the tinder that you have.
