Chances Of Surviving A Disaster Decrease Dramatically Without These Items

Communication Devices

Everything becomes much more difficult in an emergency situation.

Simple tasks we take for granted suddenly seem impossible.

But having these items can drastically improve your chances of surviving a crisis.

The ability to communicate is essential to the human species.

The transmission of language is the main thing that separates us from the animals.

Communication extends to our ability to send and receive information quickly across great distances.

However, this ease of communication can be severed in an instant during a disaster situation.

And once everyday methods of communication break down, it’s not something that can be fixed simply with money bartering.

You’ll need to be able to get into contact with friends and family, or learn critical information about what’s happening beyond what you can see yourself.

Here are three communication items you should have on hand in case a disaster strikes or you’re stranded without cell phone and internet access.

Satellite phone

A satphone connects to the telephone network by radio through orbiting satellites instead of cellular towers.

Satphones are great investments because they are not limited to areas with cell towers.

They will work just about anywhere on Earth, so if you’re stranded at sea or in the middle of the desert, you can make a call.

Cell phones can quickly become useless in remote locations like the woods, or even parts of the city that oddly have no cellular coverage.

Ham radio

Amateur (ham) radio can be a very effective tool of communication.

People using ham radios can communicate with each other around the globe, and even into space.

In an emergency situation, ham radio could be the best way to find out what’s going on in the wake of some disaster.

In order to legally access ham radio, you must get a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which will allow you to operate on “amateur band” frequencies.

However, all bets are off in an emergency situation.

Ham radio will still be around even if cell phones and internet access are inaccessible.

Two-way radio

While satellite phones and ham radios have global reach, two-way radios don’t offer anywhere near that kind of range.

Two-way radios are roughly effective within four to six miles.

They’re capable of extending beyond that, but in optimal weather conditions with limited obstructions.

However, two-way radios are great for local access.

As the name suggests, two-way radios can both transmit and receive signals.

Unlike ham radios, which might have a sophisticated setup, two-way radios are much more mobile.

If you’re on the same frequency with someone, you can communicate back and forth effectively without needing cell phones to stay in constant contact.

There are other forms of communication, but these are the most conventional and practical.

Mastering the art of ham radio might particularly come in handy during a crisis.

Don’t find yourself in a position where you’re desperately wandering for cell phone reception in order to make a distress call.

Have a sound backup plan in mind.
